General Information

Drug addiction is a chronic disease characterized by compulsive drug use that’s difficult to control. Although the initial choice to take drugs is voluntary, repeated drug use can lead to chemical changes in the brain that challenge a person’s self-control. These changes are persistent, making drug addiction a relapsing disease.

It’s common for a person in recovery to relapse, but that doesn’t mean treatment is ineffective. As with other chronic health conditions, treatment should be ongoing and tailored to a patient’s needs.

Drug Addiction Symptoms

Symptoms that suggest the presence of addiction will vary depending on the type of drug a person uses. Generally, people with this disorder display the following red flags:
  • Pushing away family and friends who don’t use drugs
  • Spending time with new friends who heavily use drugs
  • Consistently asking for money, even for small items
  • Showing up late to work or school or not showing up at all
  • Inability to hold a job
  • Neglecting basic hygiene
  • Changes in sleep patterns
  • Extreme privacy over their possessions, which includes their room, purse, or car
  • Lying about drug use and whereabouts
  • Hiding to use a drug
People with a drug addiction usually go through personality changes that make them seem more irritable and agitated. Moreover, they may also skip social gatherings unless there’s a place for them to hide and use drugs.

How Do People Develop a Drug Addiction?

A combination of factors influences the risk for drug addiction. The more risk factors a person has, the higher the chance that taking drugs will lead to an addiction. Some factors include:

Biology: A person’s genes account for half of their risk for addiction. Ethnicity, gender, and other mental health disorders can also increase their risk of drug use.

Environment: A person’s environment consists of several different influences, from family and friends to economic status and quality of life. Peer pressure, sexual and physical abuse, stress, early exposure to drugs, and lack of parental guidance can influence a person’s likelihood to turn to drugs as a coping mechanism.
Development: Environmental and genetic factors play a role in a person’s critical development stages, which can heighten addiction risk. Even though taking drugs at any age can result in addiction, a person who uses them from a young age is more likely to become dependent. Early drug exposure can negatively impact teens because the areas in their brains that control judgment, decision-making, and self-control are still developing.

Drug Addiction Dangers

  • Developing a high tolerance to the drug
  • Withdrawal symptoms when trying to quit
  • Health problems, such as an irregular heart rate, high blood pressure, seizures, and lung damage
  • Accidental and self-inflicted injuries
  • Overdose
  • Death

Drug Addiction Treatment

The dangers of drug addiction are far-reaching, and a person’s loved ones may also struggle by association. Overcoming this disorder requires a person to reach out to their support group and develop healthy coping mechanisms. For some people, treatment involves staying at an in-patient recovery center that provides them with personal care and teaches them strategies to manage their condition.

The staff and facility is amazing- Couldn’t ask for anything better. The program is well rounded with rec activities, equine therapy, gender therapy, group therapy, individual and couples therapy, and also attends various 12 Step support groups such as AA or NA. They also have family therapy and processing with options for individual settings or in a group. These help families understand what their loved ones who suffer from addiction is going through and how to support them, and also gives them their own support system.

I’d been to other recovery centers before but this one was the best, it stuck because I was willing to do the work, and with the help I received from staff I am now celebrating a year of sobriety in a couple of days. Update; I’m now 18 months sober as of yesterday and I still keep in touch with my steps family. The lessons I learned at steps will stick with me for the rest of my life. Thank you for giving me my life back.
