Information on Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder, formerly known as manic depression, is a mental health condition that causes severe mood swings that include emotional highs (mania) and lows (depression). When a person with this disorder feels depressed, they may experience intense feelings of sadness and hopelessness, leading to a loss of pleasure and disinterest. Conversely, when their mood shifts to mania, they may feel euphoric, full of energy, or irritable.

Mood swings can impact a person’s sleep patterns, energy, judgment, activity, behavior, and ability to think clearly. Some people rarely experience these episodes, whereas others may experience them multiple times a year. Although some people may experience emotional symptoms between episodes, some may not experience any.

Types of Bipolar Disorders

  • Bipolar 1 Disorder: A person with this disorder has had at least one manic episode followed by a major depressive episode. Sometimes, mania can trigger a break from reality, also known as psychosis.

Bipolar 2 Disorder: A person with this disorder has had at least one major depressive episode, but they’ve never experienced mania.

Cyclothymic disorder:  A person has had at least two years (or one year in children and teenagers) of many periods of depressive symptoms, but they may be less severe than major depression.

Other types: These include bipolar and related disorders induced by drugs, alcohol, or a medical condition, such as multiple sclerosis, Cushing’s disease, or stroke.

It’s important to note that bipolar 2 disorder isn’t a milder version of bipolar 1 disorder, as it requires a separate diagnosis. Even though the manic episodes that come with bipolar 1 disorder can be extreme, individuals with bipolar 2 disorder may experience depression for months or years, causing significant impairment.

Bipolar Disorder Symptoms

People experiencing a manic episode may:

  • Feel wired
  • Feel “high,” elated, invincible, or irritated
  • Sleepless hours
  • Skip meals
  • Talk too fast and about various subjects
  • Experience racing thoughts
  • Believe they can complete several tasks at once
  • Partake in risky activities
  • Feel like they’re unusually powerful and important

People experiencing a depressive episode may:

  • Feel perpetually worried and hopeless
  • Feel slowed down
  • Experience increased appetite and weight gain
  • Have trouble going to sleep or waking up early
  • Talk slowly or feel like nothing they say is important
  • Feel unable to complete basic tasks
  • Have an inability to experience pleasure

Bipolar Disorder Treatment

Many people with bipolar disorder stay at an inpatient residential treatment center that can provide the following:

  • Monitored medication
  • Distance from stressors and triggers
  • 24/7 access to mental health professionals
  • Structure and stabilization
  • Healthy coping mechanisms

During treatment, a patient will also receive dual-diagnosis treatment for co-occurring conditions; this is when bipolar disorder exists alongside other mental health conditions or substance abuse. Co-occurring conditions include:

  • Major depression
  • Eating disorders
  • Mood disorders
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • Intimacy disorders
  • Anxiety
  • Drug and alcohol addiction

When a person stays at an inpatient treatment center, experts will help them create a personalized treatment plan that incorporates their needs, interests, and preferences.

The staff and facility is amazing- Couldn’t ask for anything better. The program is well rounded with rec activities, equine therapy, gender therapy, group therapy, individual and couples therapy, and also attends various 12 Step support groups such as AA or NA. They also have family therapy and processing with options for individual settings or in a group. These help families understand what their loved ones who suffer from addiction is going through and how to support them, and also gives them their own support system.

I’d been to other recovery centers before but this one was the best, it stuck because I was willing to do the work, and with the help I received from staff I am now celebrating a year of sobriety in a couple of days. Update; I’m now 18 months sober as of yesterday and I still keep in touch with my steps family. The lessons I learned at steps will stick with me for the rest of my life. Thank you for giving me my life back.
