There are more pronghorns in Wyoming than there are people! These reddish brown mammals generally run about three feet tall and weigh up to 150 pounds. Compared with their body size, their pronged horns are impressive and grow on both sexes, though male horns are bigger. The horns, which are forked and burl backward, shed and grow back annually.
The last in its scientific classification family, the pronghorn is more closely related to deer than to classic antelope species seen in Africa. In fact, despite the lingo, the pronghorn is not an antelope at all, although even those of us in the know frequently use the term.
In Wyoming, the antelope hunt is subject to a lottery system. Our hunting ranches carry draw results from 60 percent to 100 percent, depending on the unit. Starting in 2007 Wyoming implemented a preference point system. If purchased, one point should give you nearly odds at nearly 100 percent for drawing a pronghorn tag. The rifle antelope hunting season on R & K ranches run from September 10th to October 31st and September 15th through November 30. Archery season, a real test of your skills with a bow, opens in all units on August 15. A guided hunt is two to four consecutive hunting days, depending on the size of your party. Food and lodging is included in the guided hunt price. Hunters hunting the southwest parts of the state will fly into Salt Lake City International Airport, rent a car, and make the two and one-half hour drive to the Queen Mountain Ranch.
