During the early hunting season, it’s easy to get overheated. Weather doesn’t matter to the avid hunter — we’ll hunt regardless of the conditions.
However, that doesn’t mean we don’t want to make the hunt as comfortable as possible. Nobody wants to be so uncomfortable that it’s unbearable. Luckily, there are some things you can do to stay cool during those hot early season weeks.
Learn how you can stay comfortable below.
Tips for Staying Cool During the Early Hunting Season
The committed and devoted sportsman has no problem dealing with the 90+ degree weather or the swarming bugs, but that doesn’t mean those parts of hunting are enjoyable. We’ll be the first to say it — that part of the early season is lousy! Thankfully, there are a few things hunters can do to make it a lot more comfortable:
Dress for Success — Staying cool starts with what you are wearing. Always opt for clothes that are lightweight, moisture-wicking, and breathable. These clothes will help you stay dry instead of a sweaty mess and make for a great base layer for fall hunting when temps drop. If the mornings are a bit cooler, bring along clothing you can layer on top and quickly shed as the sun and temperatures rise. Additionally, you may want to invest in a cooling neck wrap whose advanced technology can help you stay cool all day (find a color that won’t give away your spot!).
Hunt From a Blind or Stand — Sitting in direct sunlight can be miserable! Instead, hunt from the ground, tree blind, or tree stand in a shady area. You’ll find that the temperatures will drop ten or more degrees when you use one of these! Not only will blinds block sun rays, but they can also keep mosquitos and other pesky critters from bothering (and biting) you.
Stay Hydrated — During your early season hunt, it is essential to stay hydrated. You should always carry at least one liter of water with you and take drinks often during your hunt. Since you’ll surely be sweating, mix in an electrolyte additive. There are many water bottles and tumblers out there today that will keep ice frozen for hours, if not days, which will help keep you cool. You can also bring additional frozen water bottles that will melt throughout the day, giving you something cold to drink and can be placed on your neck, legs, or abdomen to help you from overheating.
