10 Things You Didn’t Think to Bring on Your Hunt
Packing the essentials is easy to do, but it’s just as important to bring this list of uncommon, easily forgotten items on your hunt, too. Here are the remaining five things you may want to consider packing:
Medications — Your first aid kit will have all of the basic medications you might need (pain relievers, antibiotic ointments, etc.). But, you won’t want to be stranded in the middle of nowhere and needing some other medications you may not have thought to pack. Bulk up your on-the-go medicine cabinet and bring the following meds:
- Antacids
- Antidiarrheal medications
- Laxatives
- Antihistamine and Benadryl
- Anti-anaphylaxis shot if you have life-threatening allergies
- Hydrocortisone cream
- Cough and cold medications
Hand Mirror — A handheld mirror allows you to take a glance behind you without much movement and could come in handy (pun intended). Not only that, but a hand mirror can also be useful to check on your camo face paint.
Entertainment of Some Sort — While the thought of being in your blind or tree stand and scouting out the best of the best sounds thrilling, it can get a bit slow here and there. Make sure to bring something that will entertain you during the downtime. This looks different for just about everyone — some will want a book (consider using a tablet of some kind to avoid making noise when you turn pages or a downloaded movie or podcast with headphones.
Trekking Poles — It’s no surprise for an avid hunter that you may run into some rough, uneven, or steep terrain as you make your way to your hunting site. Bringing along a pair of trekking poles will help you keep your balance and stability and will reduce your overall fatigue and chances of getting hurt.
Bird Guide Book or App — When you’re out in the woods, you’re sure to see all sorts of wildlife, especially a wide variety of birds. While it’s not necessary, it can be fun to know what species you’re looking at, so bring along a pocket bird guide so you can look up and learn about the birds in your area.
